Christian Pronovost is a pioneer. In his career, he always knew how to mix all his talents to offer us his quality DJing sessions and of course, the memorable Inbeat shop. .
Electransmission: First of all, can you describe a bit Christian Pronovost?
Christian: A passionnate young man with a particular taste for cutting edge sound & eclectique music . Very inspired by popular art, culture & social movements.
Electransmission: The beginning of your passion for electronic music began a while ago and you have been behind the turning tables for 30 years now. How did you started?
Christian: Like lot of us in late 70's by hanging in record stores, listening to radio, going to clubs.
By 1980 i started dj'ing in clubs; I just kept doing it. Also did my degree in Broadcasting & Certificate in Comm. Worked for CKOI FM / Radio Canada / CKMF as music research & Script Moved & lived in NYC for a while & moved back in 1986 & opened Inbeat Records.
From the late 80's to late 90's I played all over the city in most of the clubs afterhours, lounge & big events. In the late 90's, I took a year off & moved to live & work in London where i developped the "Lost Heroes" concepts & ideas. On one of my visit back in Montreal that i had the opportunity to take inbeat to the next level, so i decided to stay & created the new version of inbeat in a much bigger location. (Inbeat moved 5 times in 21 years). Always kept dj'ing & exploring productions .
In the late 90's, i started collaboration with fashion designers to put together music / mix for their fashion sho;, soon after I became involved as music consultant & music director for Montreal Fashion Week & Fashion & Design festival. Inbeat closed its door in 2010 after 21 years in business. Im full time music consultant / producer & working on tons of project in Art / Media / Corporate.
Electransmission: What are your biggest influences?
Christian: Everything; Culture, arts, music, history, late nights, early mornings, meeting people that lived before me.
Electransmission: What are your best memories - from DJing to the Inbeat store (RIP)?
Christian: Best memories for Inbeat was to get new music every week for 21 years. Nothing beats that ! As a dj, I'm still amazed of many nights that im doing now. It's a great previlege for me after all those years to feel so excited & energized by playing music & discovering music.
Electransmission: After having an experience in the industry, what made you decide to have your own label, Lost Heroes Recordings, that will come out soon?
Christian: Lost Heroes as a label is still in the creation process, finding the time to put the last few parts of the project is a big challenge. That said i have a bunch of releases already planned ready to go.
Electransmission: How do you find the music industry these days?
Christian: It's a jungle! You really have to LOVE it... Because for the hours invested... Not worth the $. For me it's what i do.
Electransmission: Lost Heroes Arts & Media, what it is all about?
Christian: Music Consultation on Corporate /Media /, Music Creation for advertising / events, Music Production, Creative Concept for Events / Media.
Electransmission: Do you have any club residences now?
Christian: For me now, it's about playing with & for people that really care about the night & have an appreciation of my art form. That is why i started with Rodrigo Vergara a concept night called "the box" that we can take everywhere. Just like a "pop up" club.
We're also doing a series of lost heroes sessions with int. guest dj / friends sharing the same vision in life & music. We had Osunlade & Alex from Tokyo & we have more in September. I played in all the major & influencial clubs in the city & i have no intention to settle down yet ... Actually still looking for the perfect match.
Electransmission: Finally, what are your Projects?
Christian: Working on several fashion shows for the next Fashion Weeks Seasons starting in September ... Creating those shows take lot of time & quite some energy. Producing & Remixing lots of music, many collaborations, starting the Label before 2012, fine tuning Show with the Opera De Montreal in collaboration with Zilon & Montreal designer for a show in L.A., working on a live show!
