Interview with Footprintz

Cette entrevue est aussi disponible en français!

80's inspired melodies, dandi look and fun rythms. This is what comes to my mind when I hear Footprintz (Clarian North and Adam Hunter), a Montreal based group signed on the reknown Visionquest label.

Interview with two guys with a big coming success, that's for sure.

Electransmission: First of all, can you describe a bit F o o t p r i n t z ?
C - Footprintz is synth psychedelic exploration of pop music and smoke machines and what night grooves do to your brain.
A - Footprintz explores dark themes about existence disguised by pretty melodies in combination with more physical music that is felt and not thought about. (Actually, this is just what my neighbor (and luckily my friend) Simone told us after countless nights of thumping kick drums)

Electransmission: When did your passion for music and everything started? What made you decide to continue in this field?
C
- Revenge mostly. It's a magical motivation.
A- I feel a general sense of guilt which has partially led to the thought of pursuing music.

Electransmission: How did you guys met?
C - We met in a Japanese opium den on a bed of nightmares and good times.
A - Clarian and I first met through my cousin Spaceman when we were 15 and 16 years old. The three of us snuck into what we thought was a Japanese opium den. Turned out to be an afterhours club called Sona.

Electransmission: What/Who are your biggest influences?
A - Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Dixon jr., Slick Rick, and Frederico Fellini. And Deiter Meir.
C - Ben and Ram. The Unsettlers and my pet raccoon Randy.

Electransmission: Footprinz seems to get bigger and bigger and you even got seen by Visionquest. How did that happen?
C - We just keep rolling. Night after night of noise complaints and whiskey can actually pay off believe it or not.
A - The noise complaints and whiskey nights have yet to subside actually. And also have yet to pay off completely...

Electransmission: What inspires you the most for the music creation?
A - Mostly luck.
C - Willow trees and the cold feeling in my stomach.

Electransmission: You played in an art gallery, a pool party, rooftop sunset party etc. Do you get a lot of gigs outside of the country? What are your favorite places to play?
C - We loved South America. The best hot chocolate of my life. Also, Paris when we play there. Rumour has it that Rome is the best city in the world.
A - It's true, a very wise man by the name of Marcel once told us that hot chocolate is the espresso of Ecuador. Another wise man, i won't mention his name, once told us that Rome is the best city in the world.

Electransmission: Is there a gig or an experience with the crowd or even with an artist that you can't forget?
C - Playing Miami pool party was nuts. Tale of Us very trippy and deep. Visionquest killed it and Guy Gerber was practically lifted off stage by the momentum of his mind blowing up set. We closed the set but the cops arrested our performance due to noise complaints.
A - Every show has been extremely memorable and special. The night in Montreal a few weeks ago though was on another level where everything had a strange perfection. Really small afterhours loft and all of our friends where there really partying. Spaceman's opening set exceeded levels of excellence, everyone was singing along and feeling very happy when we were playing, and then Thomas (Von Party) and Gus (Da Hoodrat) got super deep afterwards playing mind-bending records that were mind-bending. Hard to describe, but sometimes the stars align, and this was one of those nights which do not happen very often.

Electransmission: Finally, what are your future projects?
C - We're working on a few things here and there. An Lp seems to be in the works as well but for the moment we'd prefer to leave it vague and see what develops. The future looks good.
